Golden Oak gets a bad wrap and it's often said that you just need to rip out your cabinetry and start over. There is no wrong answer but the answer isn't ALWAYS to start over. Golden Oak can be transformed to look modern!
My Top Golden Oak Updates
Add Color (aka Paint!)
A vibrant color can make oak cabinets look more contemporary. You can try repainting your cabinets a neutral shade like white, gray, or black to make the oak cabinets a focal point. You can also try a two-tone kitchen, where the upper and lower cabinets are different colors. If you're stuck on picking a color, don't mess with a bunch of little paint can samples. Use Samplize instead! They will overnight you large paint sample stickers that you can peel and stick to your wall!
Update Hardware
Replace dated hardware with modern options like the options from Liberty. They have adjusta-pull options which make installing so much easier. My favorite hardware colors to use are black and champagne.
Add a Backsplash
A striking tile backsplash can draw attention away from the cabinets and create a focal point. You can also try a dark or white backsplash. I love the look of a classic white subway tile backsplash.
Update Countertop
Find a countertop that goes well with your backsplash, cabinet color and flooring. Know your budget! As most of you know, quality countertops come with a higher price tag but are a great investment for your kitchen & home (espeically if you're going to re-sell).
When it comes to design, I always recommend layering patterns.
For example, if you have a high patterned busy countertop, go with a solid color backsplash and neutral floor. But if you have neutral countertops, you can pretty much choose any design for the backsplash and not worry about focal point competition with the floor.
Other Updates
In addition to these updates, you can install new flooring, add open shelving or glass fronts to cabinets and replace the lighting over your island or sink.
